Commercial Vehicles Under Maryland Lemon Law

Larger commercial trucks face limited coverage under Maryland’s Lemon Law (§ 14-1501). Maryland defines a covered “motor vehicle” by registration class — passenger (Class A), motorcycle (Class D), multipurpose (Class M), and trucks (Class E) with a 3/4-ton or less manufacturer’s rated capacity. The cutoff is rated capacity, not a flat 10,000-lb GVWR, and motor homes are excluded entirely.

§ 14-1501 limits

  • Trucks above 3/4-ton rated capacity fall outside the truck (Class E) definition.
  • Motor homes — excluded entirely (no chassis carve-out).
  • Fleet purchases of five or more vehicles — excluded.

Common vehicles outside the Class E truck definition

  • Ford F-450, F-550, F-650/750 — well above 3/4-ton rated capacity.

  • GM Silverado 4500HD, 5500HD, 6500HD — above the threshold.
  • Cargo vans (Sprinter, ProMaster, Transit 350 HD) — varies by configuration.

Light-duty and 3/4-ton pickups (e.g., F-150, Silverado 1500/2500 rated at 3/4 ton or less, Ram 1500) generally remain within the Class E definition.

Alternative remedies for excluded vehicles

For trucks above the rated-capacity cutoff or motor homes:

  • Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act — applies regardless of class or weight.
  • UCC § 2-313 / § 2-314 — express + implied warranties.
  • Maryland CPA — applies to many transactions (with some limitations).
