About

The South Royalton Legal Clinic, operated by Vermont Law and Graduate School in Royalton, provides essential civil legal assistance to Vermont residents through a distinctive model combining law student training with meaningful client service. Operating since 1979, the clinic has evolved into one of the state's three major providers of civil legal services, delivering an estimated $1.5 million in free legal assistance annually to thousands of Vermonters.

The clinic's work centers on two primary practice areas: family law and veterans' matters. In family law, the clinic assists victims of domestic violence seeking relief from abuse orders in Orange and Windsor Counties, and represents children in contested family situations through court-appointed representation. Depending on the circumstances, the clinic may also handle divorce, parental rights and responsibilities, parent-child contact and visitation, emancipation, and stalking orders. On the veterans' side, the clinic helps service members navigate the Veterans Administration and address related issues including benefits applications and appeals, bankruptcy, discharge upgrade, estate planning, foreclosure, expungement, and SSI/SSDI appeals, as well as landlord-tenant disputes.

The clinic operates under state and federal student practice rules with approximately 40 Vermont Law and Graduate School student clinicians and work-study students supervised by experienced staff attorneys. These student practitioners handle over 150 court, administrative, and other appearances each year, developing cases from intake through resolution. Students conduct client interviews and counseling, perform legal research and discovery, negotiate settlements, analyze cases and statutes, draft briefs and motions, and prepare for and present at trials and hearings. Several students have participated in Vermont Supreme Court and U.S. District Court cases that have established precedent and clarified important legal principles.

Prospective clients seeking assistance must initiate contact with the clinic by phone or email to describe their legal issue. An intake specialist then gathers additional information, which is reviewed by a supervising attorney to determine whether representation is possible. The clinic does not guarantee representation even within its practice areas, and the intake process operates on the academic calendar, closing in May and August and running at limited capacity in January and December. If the clinic cannot assist, staff provide referrals to Vermont Legal Aid, the Vermont Lawyers Referral Service, or other appropriate resources.

Through partnerships with Vermont Legal Aid, the Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Assault, Veterans Inc., and other service providers, the clinic works collaboratively to serve clients effectively. Since its founding, the clinic has trained many of Vermont's leading legal service providers, establishing itself as both an educational institution and a vital community resource.
