Shutts, a young attorney who arrived in Miami to resolve a banking crisis and stayed to build a legal practice, the firm has grown into one of Florida's largest law firms with approximately 280 attorneys across eight offices throughout the state.

The firm's history is deeply woven into Florida's development. Frank B. Shutts, appointed a Lieutenant Colonel on the staff of Governor Cary Hardee, played a pivotal role in Miami's transformation from a small community to a major international city. Beyond his law practice, Colonel Shutts founded The Miami Herald in 1910 and remained its guiding force for 27 years. He negotiated Miami's acquisition of what is now Bayfront Park, brought the Seaboard Air Line Railway to the city, and facilitated key infrastructure projects including the Tamiami Trail and Dixie Highway. His partnership with Crate D. Bowen, who joined in 1912, solidified the firm's commitment to legal excellence. Bowen, renowned for his meticulous case preparation as a trial lawyer, famously declined a federal judgeship appointment from President Calvin Coolidge in 1929, choosing instead to continue his law practice.
