Vellum Legal was founded in 2011 by Andrew Mitton, who has practiced law in Alaska for more than 26 years. His background spans both law firm practice and in-house counsel roles at large corporations, combined with personal experience as a small business owner. Mitton developed the flat-fee model to bridge what he saw as a gap in the market: business owners previously faced a choice between self-help services without legal expertise or high-cost traditional law firms with billable hours and inefficient processes. He has advised hundreds of clients on business structuring, formed their entities, negotiated and drafted thousands of contracts, and assisted with business acquisitions and sales.

The firm is led by two attorneys. Matt Lund brings both small business ownership experience—having started companies in retail, landscaping, and commercial property—and 23 years of military service as a Judge Advocate General (JAG) officer and contracting professional. During his Air Force career, he negotiated and managed contracts valued over $4 billion, litigated numerous cases, and supervised litigation teams across criminal law, labor law, international law, contract law, and other practice areas. Like Mitton, Lund has advised hundreds of clients on business structuring, contracts, labor matters, and trademarks.

Vellum Legal's philosophy centers on helping small business owners understand the law, identify their legal risks, and weigh their options—treating clients as partners to educate rather than transactions to close. When disputes escalate toward litigation or government agency action, the firm helps clients connect with litigation counsel.

In 2020, Mitton and partners acquired The Eureka Space, a facility at 405 W. 36th Avenue in Anchorage designed as a one-stop resource hub for small business owners.
