About
The Alaska Department of Law is the legal arm of Alaska's executive branch, led by Acting Attorney General Cori Mills. Based in Anchorage with additional offices in Fairbanks and Juneau, the department serves the state through three divisions that handle criminal prosecution, civil representation, and regulatory enforcement.
The department's core mission is to uphold the rule of law, protect public safety, and provide legal representation to state agencies and executive branch offices. It prosecutes all violations of state criminal law, enforces consumer protection and unfair trade practices statutes, and serves as the principal legal advisor to the governor and other state officers. The department also administers programs including victim-witness assistance, Medicaid fraud control, charity and paid solicitor registration, and tribal relations.
Acting Attorney General Mills brought substantial legal experience to the role. She began her career in Sacramento, California, practicing land use and environmental law for four years before joining the Alaska Department of Law in 2012. Over her tenure, she has served in multiple capacities: as an assistant attorney general in the Legislation and Regulations Section, where she developed expertise in legislation, government finance, and media relations; as counsel representing the Division of Elections and Lt. Governor's office; as supervisor of the Labor & State Affairs Section; and as Deputy Attorney General overseeing the Civil Division before her appointment as Acting Attorney General in May 2026. Mills is a graduate of McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific, where she finished in the top ten percent of her class, and holds a bachelor's degree in political science.
The department is committed to excellence, maintaining the highest standards of ethics and professionalism in its work. Its values emphasize fair and just legal resolutions, respect for the rights of crime victims and injured parties, and a collaborative workplace culture grounded in integrity, trust, diversity, and accountability.
It is important to note that the Attorney General's Office and Department of Law staff provide legal services exclusively to state agencies and employees. Private citizens and organizations seeking legal advice should contact a private attorney. The Alaska Lawyer Referral Service or local bar associations can assist in locating legal representation.
